5 Breath-taking Nature Reserves in Denmark

Nature is medicine, and in times of change or crisis, we are called to go back to our source to form new responses. Mother Nature will not only be our inspiration, but also our refuge.

During the Pandemic, the whole world has been asked by Mother Earth to go back into nature as a way of leaving civilization, if only for a while, to heal and form new bodies and restore our health. In this modern life, we can take the ancient shamanic practice of asking Mother Earth for solutions by going to spectacular spaces to remind and rewild.

The thing about Nature is, that will take us closer to our natural state. The longer we stay, the more we can leave our domesticated mind behind and allow for healing back to our natural state.

We have selected five Nature Reserves in our own Motherland, Denmark, that inspire to walk in wonder and heal us with their astonishing beauty.

RAABJERG MILE

Europe’s largest moving Sand Dune

Råbjerg Mile is the largest moving dune in Northern Europe with an area of around 2 km2 (0.4 mi2) and a height of 40 m (130 ft) above sea level. The wind moves it in a north-easterly direction up to 18 metres (59 ft) a year. Over 250,000 people visit the dune every year. From the top of the dune, you will experience a stunning view. Walking to the top can be a bit challenging, but the view is worth the effort.

Mols Bjerge

Home to more than half of all wild Danish plant species

Mols Bjerge National Park is an area with both nature, culture and an active community with towns and villages, protected area and farmland, and vast areas for outdoor activities. Mols Bjerge National Park is situated in a landscape shaped by ice and water during and after the latest Ice Age. The landscape is varied, with sea and hills, kettle holes and formidable for hiking trips and taking in the Danish flora and fauna.

Æbelø

Robinson Crusoe for a day

Æbelø is a nature reserve which is allowed to look after itself, becoming like the primeval forest. If you're quiet, you can see the deer and muflon that live on the island, and perhaps you might be lucky enough to see the impressive sea eagles.Here's so much to look at - pack a food basket and head out for a nice hike!

Bulbjerg Cliff

Bird’s eye view of the North Sea

Bulbjerg is a limestone cliff in northern Jutland facing The North Sea–Skagerrak. Bulbjerg is the only rock formation on the Danish mainland and the only bird cliff outside of Bornholm Island. Besides providing an amazing view over the North Sea, Bulbjerg is also the only breeding place of the black-legged kittiwake, a North Atlantic seabird. The surrounding area is a protected nature area, which makes this cliff climb worth taking as a spectacular nature experiencing for everyone visiting.

Døn Valley

Denmarks highest waterfall

In the Island of Bornholm, you’ll Døn Valley (Døndalen - translatable as “The Thunder Valley”) with Denmark’s highest waterfall – with around 20 metres (or 65 ft).

Døn Valley is remarkably beautiful all year. But the rift valley is most beautiful just before the leaves burst and when the forest floor is filled with windflowers and the bear's garlic, and when you can hear the nightingale sing between the cliffs.
